As teachers, we feel overworked and stressed quite often. Teaching is a demanding job. This is why creating a positive school culture and boosting staff morale is key. When teachers feel valued and respected, they are more likely to reflect a positive attitude , increase productivity, and remain excited about their profession. Here are some Sunshine Committee ideas to boost morale at your school.
Teacher appreciation ideas for administrators
Administrators, what is it that teachers really want and need to feel appreciated? Here are four ways to make teachers feel valued.
Celebrate them- Leave them a note or give them a shoutout during a staff meeting
Engage with them- Get to know your teachers by having genuine conversations.
Give the gift of time- Make meetings shorter and lessen the paperwork.
Treats- Surprise your staff with occasional treats in the staff room or travel to classrooms with a treat cart.
How to improve teacher morale with a Sunshine Committee
A Sunshine Committee (or social events committee) is a great way to make teachers feel appreciated. As a member of the Sunshine Committee, I was in charge of setting up fun events, surprises, and treats throughout the school year to help spread a little joy to the staff. Administration is part of the committee and helps set up the activities.
Sometimes it’s just the little things that can completely change the vibe at your school. I’m a huge believer that your vibe attracts your tribe! A Sunshine Committee and an uplifting environment may have a strong influence on the Negative Nancys at your school and slowly start to improve teacher morale.
How to Set up a Sunshine Committee to show teacher appreciation
At the beginning of the year, an email is sent our letting the staff know about the Sunshine Committee and all of the activities associated with it. Donations are collected from staff members. This money goes towards an account used for all Sunshine Committee purposes.
We usually walk around the hallways with our cart to distribute treats and smiles to our staff. Sometimes we’ll leave goodies in the teacher’s lounge. Something as simple as offering some afternoon coffee can have the power to turn a teacher’s day around. If you’re looking into creating a Sunshine Committee and need ideas to boost morale at your school, you’re in the right place.
