The Best Counting Toys for Preschool

March 1, 2023

kids are sitting at a table playing a counting game with their teacher

Are you a stay-at-home mom looking for the best educational toys for your toddler? As a mom of a little one, I’m constantly looking for toys to help my daughter learn numbers, colors, and shapes and prepare her for preschool. Check out this list of some of my favorite counting toys for preschool-aged children!

The Best Counting Toys for Preschool

Learning Resources Mini Motor Math Activity Set

Little ones will enjoy rolling a die and moving these colorful little cars to the correct number of spaces on the included track. Use this game to give students practice with number recognition and counting skills. The included colorful die will also provide students with opportunities to review their colors.

Learning Resources Super Sorting Pie

This sorting activity gives preschool learners practice with early number skills, patterning, problem-solving, and more! Plus, the jumbo tweezers included help strengthen students’ fine motor skills. Students will enjoy counting out the fruits to match numbers 1-10 at the bottom of their pie dish. This activity is versatile and will likely become a staple for your learners.

Monkey Balance Math Game

Looking for a way to help preschool students recognize numbers 1-10 while also practicing counting? This monkey balance game requires students to put a number on one side of the scale and then place the same number of monkeys on the other side of the scale in order to keep it balanced. Children will enjoy watching as the scale tries to balance itself as they add more monkeys.

Wooden Counting Number Peg Board

This Montessori-inspired counting activity gives toddlers practice with number recognition, counting, and fine motor skills all while feeling like they’re playing. They will identify which number (1-10) is shown on each individual peg board and then count and insert the corresponding number of pegs into the holes to match. This would be a great addition to a preschool math center!

Magnetic Color and Number Maze

This magnetic maze gives homeschool and preschool students a hands-on way to explore colors and numbers 1-10. Students will use the magnetic pen to drag and drop the correct color and number of beads into the corresponding paint bucket. Use this activity during independent time, on car rides, and more to give students practice targeting their fine motor skills and knowledge of numbers and counting.

Match It! Counting Puzzles

Use these self-correcting counting puzzles as a fun, hands-on way to give students practice with number recognition and counting. Students will work to pair up 30 puzzles as a way of strengthening their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and mathematical abilities. Students will enjoy counting the pictures on one piece and then trying to find the matching number piece.

Counting Dinosaurs Toys

These colorful dinosour toys are perfect for tiny hands to manipulate and have a wide-variety of play opportunities! Students can sort and count the dinosaurs by colors or by dinosaur type. The set includes small colored containers and toddler-sized tongs so that children can grab and count the pieces one by one. Perfect for hand-eye coordination and working on those fine motor skills!

Montessori Numbers and Balls Counting Toy

This wooden, Montessori-style counting game will help preschool students work on counting skills, number identification, and colors! Children will place the correct number of balls under each number using their hands, chopsticks, or tweezers.
