How to Help Students Who Struggle with Grammar

July 23, 2025

If your students seem to forget basic grammar skills the moment you move on to the next lesson, you’re not alone! Grammar is one of those tricky subjects that often feels abstract and disconnected for students. And when grammar is taught in isolation? It’s even harder for them to remember.

There are so many rules and exceptions when it comes to grammar, and we expect students to remember them. Even your most confident student writers can get easily confused.

That’s why I love using hands-on and visual strategies that students can actually interact with.

Why Are Grammar Skills So Tricky For Students?

Some students just understand grammar rules and are able to apply them in their own writing. However, some students are left needing a lot more practice and exposure to be able to confidently implement the rules in their own writing.

Sure, grammar worksheets can be helpful at first. However, students also need visuals, hands-on opportunities, and actual grammar application to help them fully grasp the concepts.

That’s why I started incorporating grammar interactive notebooks into my weekly grammar lessons. Interactive Grammar Notebooks keep the learning and skills practice front and center, while upping the engagement and fun for students.

Student Engagement Changes EVERYTHING!

The biggest shift that I saw in my students’ understanding of grammar concepts was when I started using interactive grammar activities.

There’s just something about interactive pages that pulls students in. It’s hands-on, visual, and it gives those struggling learners something concrete to hold onto.

They were actually engaging with grammar skills.

This Grammar Interactive Notebook transformed into a toolbox. One that gave students visual reminders of what grammar rules looked like and sounded like. And one that they could break out and use whenever they needed it!

It wasn’t just about cutting and gluing. It was about ownership. They added their own examples, highlighted key points, and actually used their notebooks as a reference during writing.

What is a Grammar Notebook? (And why it works)

Photo shows one page of an interactive notebook for grammar. The page has a label for Pronoun-Verb Contractions pasted at the top, with paper slips tucked into a hexagon shape that has been glued to the page.

An interactive grammar notebook is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a place where students can interact with grammar. Think cutting, gluing, sorting, matching, and note-taking.

Usually, it is in a spiral notebook. This notebook becomes filled with flaps and pockets that become grammar reference pages, and students can easily look back on.

It is like taking your best and most colorful anchor charts and bringing them to life! But the students are part of the entire process. They write the notes, they come up with the examples for the grammar skills, and they show the skill in action right on the page.

Want to see exactly how I use interactive notebooks in my classroom? Check out this post for the full breakdown.

Interactive notebooks are also perfect for supporting visual learners or students who need extra scaffolding. These free grammar activities are a great way to introduce the idea and try it out in your classroom.

Tips for Making Grammar Instruction More Effective

You don’t need to reimagine your entire Language Arts block to make grammar lessons more effective! Try these few simple changes to make grammar more engaging in your classroom.

Keep it consistent- Squeezing in quick grammar mini lessons in small groups or literacy centers can make a big difference. Repetition is key!

Make it hands on- Let students sort, match, build, glue, and color. It helps bring those abstract grammar rules to life.

Circle back- Add grammar review activities like these into your weekly plans. Regular spiral review is super important.

Warm up with grammar- Grammar morning work or bell ringers are bite sized ways to review grammar concepts without adding even more to your lesson plans!

Progress Over Perfection

Grammar isn’t one of those “one and done” skills you can breeze through. It’s something students will grow into as their writing develops over time.

The goal is never perfection. It is helping students feel confident applying what they’ve learned to their own writing. With consistent, hands-on practice and visual tools like interactive notebooks, your students will start to make real progress.

Even if they are still mixing up word endings and writing in run-on sentences? That’s ok! They are learning, and their progress is something to celebrate!

Want to get started? Grab your Grammar Interactive Notebook and start making grammar practice more engaging, visual, and effective for you and your students.
